One afternoon as I was working on marketing another website when a friend of mine walked in and said “Rod, you have got to help me, I have a product and I need to sell it on the internet.” Hugh had been using a fancy company that knows all about flash and making it look pretty, but it did not rank what so ever at all. He had literally no competition and he even had a patent on his product. He knew I was good and he saw all the sites I had in the top ten and begged me to do the same for his. He made me offers and percentages and maybe even a part ownership. He even gave me a case of his product.
I was absolutely amazed and truly wanted to help him. The first thing I asked was, how many people do you think are looking for your product on the internet? He said I am sure a lot! I said ok, how many competitors do you think you have? He said a few, not many that his formula was the best.
I really did not believe in his product and that is why I will not mention it while talking about him, it is not an illegal product, just one that is on the border of good or bad for you.
The first thing I told him was I can get you to the number one spot for his keyword in less than a month. What I also told him was we need to establish how many are looking for what he had and how many are competing for the same exact keyword.
Conclusion:
After doing my research I gave Hugh a call. Bad news buddy. “Come on Rod what can be bad?” Well, the good news is you only have 30 competitors marketing your keyword. The bad news is only 60 people a month are looking for what you have to offer. 60? Yes 60 and I cannot guarantee that 60 is actual people looking. What do you mean he said, 60 is good, that is almost 800 a year! Well Hugh let me ask you a question. How many times a day do you search Google to see where you rank for that keyword? He said once, proudly. Well then that is 30 of your Monthly searches right there. Now, out of the 30 competitors how many do you think are checking their ranking as well on a monthly bases? “O” says. Yes not much left after that for actual people looking for what you have. But aren’t you glad you did not put a ton of cash into marketing for that keyword? Hugh went on to tell me had been paying this guy 300 a month to do Seo for his site and he had done so for 10 months. $3,000 and the guy didn’t even put a title tag on a single page! Nor a description tag! Not one single back link!
What this means is that he has to market other ways. Media, magazines would be a great way. Or he could go for keywords that relate to his product in some way or fashion. This is what I used to get Power Hoist on the map. It was a weird lift and it went in the back of a pickup truck. No one was searching for truck hoist or Power lift because they have never heard of it. What I did was marketed it as a Lift gate! BINGO! Now people could relate! I sold more lift gates that the previous Power Hoist owner’s with a 5 million dollar budget. Power Hoist was sold and I was laid off with the sale, but they still to this day have not beaten my record.
The moral of the story is you really have to do research and see if you really can use the internet or if you need to seek other means of marketing. If you have n budget sometimes the internet is the only choice. The internet for sure has to have your presence with a website, people expect it and let’s face it a website will save you thousands on brochures.
But what people do not understand is the fact that if you have more competition for a given keyword than what people are looking for you are looking for hard work and little sales. Getting in the top 10 will take a tone of extra work and in some cases may be impossible.
A perfect example is the keyword “running shoes”. The people in the top ten and the site that is in the number one spot is a very wealthy and lucky site/s.
Why? Because the keyword running shoes have 392,000 websites marketing that keyword in their title tag and only 22,500.00 this was for the month of September. 392,000 competitors and 22,500 looking, can you see a slow return on your investment? I sure can. Looking at my research I could see 3500 people are looking for “Nike track shoes” and there is only 12 people with that exact title tag on a single page!! This is huge news for someone selling running shoes!
