Wow what a touchy subject! Link Exchange is not so tricky, only time consuming. Back when the link farms started popping up Google quickly took the wheel and shut them down. Links need to be natural and not too much of abundance. Lots are great, however not over night. Deposit 500 a week in a bank and no problem, then one day deposit 10,000 it will toss flags.
Here are some very important tips to remember when doing back links (and remember this is all trial and error, no one really knows 100%)

Never give out your ftp info for an analysis or link exchange! Also never give out your log in info to make changes on your site or do back links, this should be done by your current Web Master or yourself, unless you really trust who you are dealing with. Most Web Masters make beautiful sites and are clueless about SEO. Ever see a site that was butt ugly yet was in the number one spot for a highly searched key word? This would be a SEO pro that stinks with photo shop and or Dreamweaver.

It is nearly impossible for a Web Master to do a site AND do the SEO. If they were able to do both it would not be impossible to give both 100%.

Triangular Links

Link exchange is one thing however triangular links is totally different. They are good for the people offering them. So many try and fool Google to only beg for mercy later. Here is a few reasons why triangular or 3 way links are no good:

If you are keeping up with your links every so often you will need to check them and make sure people are still linking to you, in the event you do so (and you should every 3 months) you will not see the person linking to you, only there triangular link.

So how do you know which one is still linking to you? You don’t! The good part is it would not do the 3rd party any good to delete the link later so the odds of it still being there 6 months down the road are good. However you will never know. You will be able to see the links linking to you and of course the whole idea is to have more coming in then going out which is nearly impossible especially if you are honest.

So basically what this means if you look at your out bound link and you go to their site (or use a software program) to see if they are linking to you and you do not see them, then you would of course delete that link.
Another reason you need to check the links is to make sure they are still working in general. Many sites close for certain reasons, like if they no longer need the site or they flat our went out of business.
