Things NOT to do:

1. Hidden text – These send flags, low contrast text, hidden text, etc. If you are trying to hide something Google will find it.
2. Multiple domains pointing to the same content – Use 301 redirects to avoid this penalty. Google also recommends no more than 5 sites being forwarded to one domain name.
3. Duplicate content – especially copyright infringement (stealing content also helps your competitor rank better!) Make sure you right you own content this is very important. The better the content the more others will copy you and in turn make you rank better.
4. Affiliate content that offers no new content or value. Content that has no “added” value is pointless. Make sure your content is good for you and your readers.
5. Malformed HTML – Engines will bypass a page or entire sites. Compressed html is in, it helps your site come up faster and this is good for the reader and Google. Google prides themselves on speed and accuracy.
6. Query strings in the URL especially with a name value pair with the string “id”. This may result in page penalties.
7. Word stuffing – phrase densities exceeding 5% and aggregate densities exceeding 15%. Do not just say your keyword over and over for no reason. Many sites rank high that only say the keyword once. Same with your keyword tags, try not to say your keywords more than 3 times in your tags if you sue them.
8. Duplicate Title and Meta Description tags throughout the site(s). each page is different and each one should have different tags period.
9. Spam keywords in the Meta Keywords or description that do not appear in the page. Do not put a keyword in your tag if you have no keyword on the page. This makes no sense yet is done all of the time. If you write about it then use the keywords in your content.
10. JavaScript redirects and Other Cloaking techniques – The Search Engines see one thing and the viewers see another thing. Cloaking is BAD.
11. Fast traffic Cons! Sending bogus traffic to your site will indeed hurt you. On a normal basis traffic gradually grows. Google tracks your patterns! If you get an average of 200 unique hits a day and all of a sudden you are getting 600 that is a flag. Why send traffic to your site that does you no good and makes you no money? It is not going to make you rank higher. So stay away from the “we list your site with thousands of classifieds, directories, paid links etc”. It is flat out not worth it! Google can black list you and/or put you at the end of the line.
